Professor Hummel, born and educated in Germany, has also worked in the USA and is an expert in the physiology and pathophysiology of the chemical senses -- olfaction, gustation and irritation. He is on the Editorial board of many publications such as Frontiers in Neuroscience, Chemosensory Perception and the International Journal of Psychophysiology. In 2009 he was awarded the Alexander von Humbolt prize by the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique (FNRS) in Brussels.
